MCYD Condemns Actions in U.S. Capitol
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Democracy depends on the peaceful transfer of power, a value that has been entrenched in our country since its very founding. Today’s actions at the U.S. Capitol represent no more and no less than an insurrection and a coup attempt.
Actions like these are destructive to our democracy and a disgrace to our most fundamental values. Our president has been inciting these beliefs and actions. By repeatedly encouraging his followers to believe this election fraudulent with no evidence, he is eroding the fabric of our democracy. Worse, in our very state, our Senator Mike Braun and Representatives Jackie Walorski, Jim Baird, and Jim Banks have committed to supporting these unfounded lies.
These representatives swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. And by participating in this movement to overturn the results of an election, they are violating their oath. We decry these actions and we demand more from our elected leaders.
Furthermore, we have seen how protests are addressed differently when different individuals participate. The response today exemplified the systemic racism we have seen borne out over many years in our society. While Black Lives Matter protesters were beaten, tear-gassed, and shot, these rioters penetrated the Capitol’s hallowed chambers with little resistance.
Today is a dark day for our democracy and our society. But we are hopeful. We are inspired by the amazing grassroots work done in Georgia to officially elect the first Black Senator and the first Jewish Senator in their state’s history. We are grateful to the young Democrats from Indiana and across our country that made these victories possible. And we are hopeful for brighter days ahead under a Biden-Harris administration.
Marion County Young Democrats is an official chapter of the Indiana Young Democrats which supports young people all over the state to become active in Democratic politics and issue advocacy.
